Being and feeling different

In this lesson students will explore pre-conceptions, and discuss their experiences of discrimination via ‘find someone who’ and small group/breakout room activities.

Types of Discrimination

In this lesson students will focus on the vocabulary used to talk about different types of discrimination, will look at case studies to identify discrimination and will think about where prejudice comes from.

What is Discrimination?

In this lesson students will reflect on what discrimination is, developed their note-taking skills by watching a short film about discrimination and reflected on what can be done to prevent discrimination.

In this lesson students will listen to a clip from a radio programme where people talk about their identities, they will think about which aspects of their identity are important to them and how they see others/are seen by others.

Treating People Equally

In this lesson students will examine two case studies which describe unequal treatment, and will act out roleplays in order to practise the language used to have difficult conversations; to challenge and respond to unfairness.

The Elderly

In this lesson students will consider their own pre/misconceptions about elderly people, will watch videos and read texts where people explore this, and will practise the language used for agreeing and disagreeing in a discussion.

Youth

In this lesson students will think about the positives and difficulties of being a young person and will read about some people’s experiences and thoughts. They will reflect on how this stage is different in different countries and on peer and parental relationships.

Tattooing

In this lesson students will listen to a talk about why people have tattoos, read about the history of tattooing and body markings, completed a series of comprehension activities and reflected on attitudes to tattooing.

Body Piercing

In this lesson students will listen to a talk about why people have body piercings, read about the history of body piercing and complete a series of comprehension activities. They will reflect on attitudes to body piercing.

Sustainable Fashion

In this lesson students will listen to a  talk about the environmental impact of fashion. They will read about sustainable fashion and working conditions in cheap clothes factories. They will discuss changes needed to the fashion industry and how to reduce waste.

Diversity: About

Disabilities

In this lesson students will think about different types of disabilities and the effects that having a disability can have on people’s social and working lives; they will receive character cards and discuss these with each other. Finally, they will think about how they can both share their own and learn more about others’ life experiences.
