Effective Communication

In this lesson students will read about people’s experiences of and views on verbal communication, will discuss different ways of communicating and will practise the language of agreeing and disagreeing. 

 

Miscommunication

In this lesson students will watch a short animated film about miscommunication, will discuss their experiences of communication and think about what influences the ways in which people communicate, and will create some tips for effective communication.

Active Listening

In this lesson students will discuss good and bad listening habits; they will watch a video which discusses active listening, and then will practise it themselves. 

 

Being a good listener

In this lesson students will discuss their experiences of being listened to very well and not so well; they will consider factors which affect listening and then will conduct a role play in which their characters act out both good and bad listening. They will come up with good listening tips by designing a poster which gives advice. 

 

Listening Skills

In this lesson students will consider their own listening skills, will reflect on culture-based listening practices by conducting a questionnaire and will think about the uses of open-ended and closed questions.

News

In this lesson students will review terminology to do with the news, read examples of others’ opinions about accessing the news/current affairs and discuss their own experiences of this by creating and conducting surveys within the class. 

 

Values and Beliefs

In this lesson students will think about the things that are important to them, watch a short film in which people discuss what is important to them and use this to discuss how people with different views and beliefs can live together. 

 

Social Media

In this lesson students will consider different methods of communication now and in the past. They will compare their experience of using social media others and discussed their feelings about social media. They will do research to find useful social media groups or forums for anyone living in their locality or country. 

 

Classroom Expectations

In this lesson students will discuss discipline in the classroom, group their ideas and create a list of classroom expectations for the school year.  

 

Asking and answering politely - in the restaurant

In this lesson students will talk about international cuisine, practice asking and answering questions politely at the dining table.

 

Asking and answering politely - everyday situations

In this lesson students will talk about ways of asking and answering politely, formally or informally, in situations important to their everyday life.
